Just replaced the starter motor in an older, 1992, F150. 5.0 4x4. Starting strong now, but when I push the clutch in there is a whirring(?) noise. I'm guessing it is the starter not disengaging. My comphrehension on the relationship between the starter, flywheel and clutch is a bit cloudy. Any thoughts on next step would be appreciated.

Whirring noise with the clutch depressed is normally a bad throw-out bearing. The clutch is not connected to starter but I guess a tooth broken off the fly wheel or the old starter could have dropped into the pressure plate which is connected to the clutch and might be causing the noise. Good luck taking those trannys out they are a lot of fun.

Yep that's a throw out bearing. If you take your foot off of the clutch pedal and it goes away, yep.
Turn the radio up.

Thankyou. Was trying to avoid it being clutch related in my head and was fixated on the reman starter being the problem. Wishful thinking.
