Pediatrician questions

Been perusing this, just say "none of your business Doc" respectfully, or ask him if he wears a seat belt all of the time, or watches his cholesterol/and stress related factors in his life as this contributes to decrease in autoimmune deficiencies, poorer work habits and reliance on legal stimulants to perform(Coffee, tea, nicotine...etc). Unless it(the "questions") directly relates as to why you are there it is an uninvited intrusion. MO. You know it is cool to encourage seat belt usage with kids but asking about their parents driving habits would be akin to the "gun" questions. Just seems quite inappropriate.

What level of training does one require to be able to adequately advise somone on the dangers of children and loaded guns?

Agree that we'll have to agree to disagree. Got no problem with that. Life is more fun when we don't all think alike.

Agree with you on the handouts and we actually do give out handouts. We kill the hell out of some trees with handouts to parents on these issues as we know (and studies have shown) less than half of what we say and advise is retained.

And yes I do care about my patients feelings. A lot of gun owners like to say they'd get pissed off, like to say they'd storm out of an office telling the doc to go to hell, but in reality would likely see nothing wrong with the way I approach it and how we discuss it as I'm not doing so in an authoritarian/confrontational tone. As you (or someone in this thread wisely suggested) it comes up in a conversational tone as I go over a number of the issues I've mentioned here. I telll my patients all the time to question me if they think I'm wrong, don't hesitate to ask me to clarify something, and that I WANT them engaged in our conversation and not just a bump on a log being talked to. I want them well educated on their conditions and encourage them to become educated and research their questions/conditions and not to hesitate to ask questions/suggest treatment options/etc. Doesn't bother me a bit. You'd probably be shocked at how NON-authoritarian I am in my practice. (this is going to come off as bragging, self serving, and tooting my own horn . . I realize that) May be why I've been voted the best primary care doc in NW GA (four county area) for the past 3 years running by the readers of the local paper. I'm doing something right up here!

Graybeard, I'd wager you and I would hit it off well if we met and if you were my patient you'd be one of the ones I spend 15 minutes talking guns/hunting/shooting with and then scramble to handle the medical issue the last 5 minutes of the visit!
I think I have found my new doc.

New to the site. I began watching the classifieds, made a couple trades, but have gravitated to the forum. Followed this thread last couple days, addictive!!
Reminds me of Piers Morgan interviewing Ted Nugent. Ted told Piers, "I don't think you'll ever understand". For me I don't think I would mind THIS doctor discussing gun safety with me. However, here's the problem, now days there are way too many folks who are not like minded. I am a firm believer in the 2nd amendment, I happen to think they got it right. Without a doubt it is under a relentless attack. The founding fathers warned us, in fact made it our duty to question and keep our government in check. I wonder... how many freedoms must we forfeit to remain free.
Ted got it right, they will never understand.

I own a lot more guns than piers and someday aspire to order ammo by the pallet like Uncle Ted.

Heres some fun facts for you doc 98,000 deaths from medical errors in the US EACH YEAR according to the Institute of Medicine. Staggering.

Now how many people were killed by guns? And how many of those were children?

Sounds like your profession is the one that needs to be schooled and nannied.

This article was in the wall street journal, written by a surgeon.

How many you reckoned we saved?

Good point. They have stats on how many died, I am sure there are resources with data that shows this also. I appreciate those in the medical profession, I myself was in the mid 80's employed in this field. I just think this is too much to ask questions not related to the reason someone requests your services. I am not a proponent of the "village" raising children, I as a parent take that on myself since my kids came here involuntarily. It is my responsibility, I fear I am in the minority of Americans now as to this task. Their Education/maturation is mine and my wife's calling.

So when the news is predicting icy roads and tells everyone to be careful driving with the icy conditions are they being judgemental, judging people to be incapable of driving?
When I watch the weather on TV I expect to hear about ... the weather. So if they tell me about icy roads 1) That is what they are supposed to do and 2) they might be telling me something I don't know, which is why I turned it on the in first place. If the weather mans tells me about gun safety.... well....

And a Doctor might be telling somebody something they don't know, not everybody is a gun expert just because they own a gun so what does it hurt for a Doctor to offer a few gun safety tips?

Who's to say the Dr is qualified to say anything about guns or gun safety? Just because their a Dr doesn't mean they know anything about GUNS. And the Dr's information goes into your National Data Base Health Record to the Gov..

And I think this Comes on TONIGHT

And the Doctors were Required to turn a List of all their Jewish patients over to the Nazis.

You Violated My Trust when you sent my Health Records to the National Database.
Respectfully I still say "None Your Business Doc".
