Why would anyone get a Pitbull is a mystery
Other than to show off how manly they are because they have a mean dog.

to those that say pits are not more aggressive than other dogs ,

you ever see a news story about a kid being mauled or killed by a golden retriever, or a lab, or a beagle or a basset hound ?

no you have not .

so why take a chance that your harmless pit bull mix is going to hurt someone ?

lol if you think a golden retriever has never mauled a child

This is Dixie, an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix. 42lbs of pure goofy and love, she’s like a mini pittie. lol! We got her from our local shelter last year after my big boy Finlay passed from cancer, she has been such a blessing to my wife and I. Here she’s trying to keep my wife from putting the sheets on the bed. Hahaha!

I love this little rascal.

So does it mean that it doesn't happen if it ain't on the news?

The OP's post shows it happens more with pits. Labs are on the list, just much lower. I do personally know of a full blood Lab that bit a kid (in the family) and was promptly put down.

I would also say that it's my experience that pits are treated pretty crappy in general. Shelters have a lot of pits and many are at least pit mixes. My wife liberated an abused dog once, just so happened to be a pit. It could be that pits have a bad rep so they're less likely to be adopted by responsible owners. I'm not saying that if you have a pit, you're irresponsible. Just saying that could at least skew the results.

Fact is that I have had two. Those two are different enough that I'll never have another though.

In my experience I have never had any kind of problem with anybody’s pit, ever. Maybe it’s just me I don’t know, most dogs of all breeds just seem to like me right off the bat. I’ve even had interactions with two Timber Wolves and one Wolf hybrid that took to me right away. Could be because I like dogs better than most people, who knows. In 62 years I’ve been bitten 3 times, once by a GSD when I was a kid and twice by a freakin’ Dachshund. That Dachshund was just a mean SOB, he hated everybody except his owner, didn’t even like her son. lol!

Ok, never have another... Who really gives a flying ****.

I've had two as well, FatAlbert was the most loyal, sweetest, empathetic dog I've ever known and my entire circle that knew him would say the same.

Thor is doing his best to fill those shoes, when thor's time comes hopefully many years from now I'll search out again for another because they have been the best companions.

Everyones experience varies.

And yes, pitbulls are extremely popular amongst ****ty poor people looking for a dog as some sort of social status. Look no further than your local shelter, or tied to trees in your local ghetto, or just search for puppies on craigslist and see every other post is some idiot sell $50 "pitbull puppies".

I'll be the first to say this world needs way less pitbulls (way less dogs in general) they are over breed, unethically breed, and unethically treated. It's a major PEOPLE problem though, it's not the dogs or the breeds fault.

Pitbulls are no different than 99% of all other dogs, simply give them your heart and they give theirs back 10 fold.

Man, I know how you could get that impression, but it simply isn't true.

First of all, the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) did a study several years back that investigated several thousand "pit" attacks. They discovered that in 83% of the cases the breed was misidentified in the report. A lot of them were not even close misses either. Breeds like Bernese Mountain Dogs were being IDed as pits.

Second, I personally know of one case where the media did everything they could to give the impression a dog that attacked a little girl was a pit when, in fact, it was a Cocker Spaniel.

Third, the worst scars on my body are from an 11 month old female Golden Retriever. She was able to take me down and chew me up because, as a new trainer many years ago, I did not have my antenna up and didn't see it coming... because she was an 11 month old Golden Retriever. You'll never see me in shorts due to the scars. I have a few smaller scars from Labs, too. Funny thing, I don't have any scars from pits.

Fourth, even in the bad old days when they were being bred for and actively pit fighting they were specifically bred not to be human aggressive. Any dog that showed aggression to a handler or spectator, even in the heat of battle, was immediately destroyed.

Fifth, in over 30 years of being a professional dog trainer I have not seen any more tendency towards human aggression from pits or pit mixes than an average dog and I have trained hundreds of them.
