I'm confused about the tricking out part, I mean, most of the stuff people "swap" are the stocks and colors. Sure optics, but its that tricking out or attaching basics? Light?

I agree. I have to do something, left messing with cars and got deeper into firearms.

Having used the M-16A2 in the 80's I am a little partial to a "naked gun" myself. My rifle is a S&W M&P MOE. Simple, but effective. All that stuff added on can make it quite heavy. I was an M-60 gunner and did not like hauling that thing on a long hump. Certainly wouldn't want the same from my M4.

This thread is not intended to be offensive or belittle anyone's decision to purchase what they want- but rather I would really like to know why people buy them and sink so much money into accessories that have no real purpose other than CQB or maybe defending the Mall of GA from the roof top.

-I have carried and employed an M4 overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan on multiple deployments because I had to, and all we had attached to the thing was a Paq-4 IR laser and an ACOG. The same goes with the gear we wore- wear as little as possible to reduce weight and help eliminate snags when moving in tight spaces. When we were at Camp Victory in Baghdad, my buddy would call the troops who looked like a walking Blackhawk catalog "Gear Queers" and quite honestly the guys doing the job don't use all this tactical stuff.

-After having alot of experience with the .556 platform, you couldn't pay me to own one; but then that's my personal opinion.

My Main Question: What do yall do with these decked out AR's???????? Let's keep it clean and respect a grown man's decision to buy what he wants and I appreciate your comments.

Modern ballistics and accessories have defined my need and the roles I place my rifle in. As my "go-to" home defense weapon I am afforded countless benefits over both handguns and shotguns including:

more effective ballistics - Handguns
Less penetration- shotguns
purpose driven loads for the rifle - Not that the alternatives do not have these
A much shorter package while still retaining 30 round capacity- 11.5 in barrel
Suppressor usage- to protect my own situational awareness and hearing as well as my families
flexible addition of both white light and optics- Yes shotguns can have these things, but not with the same degree of flexibility
more flexible training that shotguns if I don't have time to make it outdoors- no indoor ranges allow birdshot (or buck from what I remember)
a more forgiving weapon for my wife to use
flexibility to adapt my rifle to numerous roles via 2-pins



All these made my decision for me. I still love ak's and believe they can fill the role just as well if set up with the proper ammo and careful thought. I will gladly run my AR over my 12ga any day though, because when situations change flexibility may very well be the key to my survival.

And I too have many friends who have deployed 5.56 weapons overseas. Between the military limiting ammunition selection and the old msconception that a dry rifle would function better I do understand some of the negative talk. On the same note I know those same weapons have filled their role more than sufficiently countless times.

1 none of that damn desert dirt around here. My Ar is dead on reliable.
2 not limited to only fmj like the military is. Use TAP, TSX or 62gr Fusion, either will lay a hog and deer on it's butt. But 6.8 is MUCH more effective with 85 grain TSX.
3 stick to barrier blind loads for windshields, avoid trying to punch through cover.. Less recoil than 7.62 or shotgun so it's better for the wife to defend herself with.

Well said. I've shoot the hell out of several AR's with admittedly little deep cleaning. I even have one chambered in 5.45X39 and shoot corrosive, laquered steel case Russian surplus and 6000 rounds later not one single failure. When I'm done I dunk the gun in a stream, blow it out with a compressor and lube it. Also my AR's drop deer in 1 shot every time with 69g JHP?
