Ruger American or Savage FVSR?

To get the best accuracy on the Boyds you have to pillar bed it, or so I've read on the interwebz, so it must be true, right?

What's the Ruger accuracy like?

A vote for the Ruger American here. I got a great deal on the threaded model from Cherokee Gun. I threw it in a boyds stock and put a 12x SWFA SS on it. Here is a 25 yard 5 shot group with Aguila Subsonic and a Spectre 2 ( I pulled the last one).

And it is not pillar bedded.

I have both, both are super accurate, but I'd say the savage is more accurate for shooting little tiny groups. However, the Ruger cost about the same, uses better mags, MUCH better stock, and has sweet sights on it and is super accurate for anything you'd want to do with a 22. If your just going to pick one go with the Ruger. IMO

Hi,

I now have both. I just picked up the Ruger Predator in .22 yesterday. I have not shot it yet but it feels great and looks good. The Savage is nice and less money but I don't like the stock. I have lots of 10/22 mags.

Rumor is that there were only 500 of the Predator .22 and 500 of the Predator 22 Mag produced. Will they make more? Maybe. But they are difficult to find now. So if you do see one, buy it. There is always the regular Ruger American .22 with a threaded barrel.

Good luck,
Glenn

I like the look of the distributor exclusive model. I have a Ruger 10/22, it is not a bolt action but it is threaded and very accurate. As stated the mags are a big plus with the Ruger.

I forgot to add I feel the Ruger is much more comfortable shooting off hand. The FVSR is pretty heavy with that big barrel, scope, and probably a bipod or something.

I've got the savage, and I feel it's a lightweight tack driver that's mouse fart quiet with a Sparrow. But the mags and mag release do kinda suck. It came with a 5rnd and I bought 2 more 10rnd mags. The price of the mags seemed reasonably cheap at the time. Are you really going to do big mag dumps with a bolt action? That's not what bolt actions are for. If you're gonna rapid fire 10+ rounds, then what are you doing with a bolt action? For me, I just don't think the mags are REALLY that big of a consideration on this kind of gun. The 10rnd mags load easier and retain the rounds better than the 5 rnd mag that came with the gun, so maybe that's what others are complaining about. My 5 rnd mag will spit out the top round if you drop it, so I have to be slightly gentle with it. That's what I mean by "kinda suck". Otherwise, that FSVR is my most handled gun over the past 2 years, and I've had plenty of happy moments with it. The squirrels that used to live near me... not their favorite gun.

I have a ton of 10/22 mags, but didn't know of a reasonably priced ruger bolt action that used those mags when I got the savage. I'm not sure the American rimfire series was available at the time. Very nice to see those out now.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. Your existing mags make a very compelling argument for the Ruger, but if you found an awesome deal on an FSVR, then take it. You can always sell it later and get the Ruger if you really want to. But... who sells guns? Keep them and buy them all!!!!
