Savage Axis heavy barrel rifles for long range?

Saw a heavy barrel Savage Axis 6.5 Creedmore at Walmart for $400 including scope. Don't expect much out of of the scope for that price, but how do the rifle shoot? Would it be a good donor action and barrel for longer range shooting?

In that price range, and especially given that you are ok with tossing the stock, look at the Howa 6.5 barreled action. $450. The scope with the Axis will be trash, so wouldn't equate that into there at all.

The Howa gives you the HACT trigger, which for a factory trigger, is pretty impressive. The barrel is also threaded, something I don't believe most Axis model come with.

Yes by all means if you are going to toss the stock and the scope this would be the way to go. Unless you just can't wait and want to shoot immediately.

The AXIS is a different action footprint than the 10. Not much aftermarket support in the way of good stocks and chassis. I would just find a model 10/11/16/whatever or look at a rem 700, howa1500, tikka t3x, win mod 70. All have strong aftermarket support to do whatever your heart desires.
