Guys, I have heard many times, people talking about shooting a 410 shotgun shell in their 444 rifle. I tried to fit one in my NEF 444 rifle and it would only go in about halfway. Has anyone on here done this? Wallace in Ga

The .444 marlin case tapers evenly
from .471 near the rim
to .453 o.d. at the case mouth.

But the thicker plastic hull of the .410 shell
is .478 near the base, and only tapers to .463 at
the case mouth. So no, it should not work.
If it comes close to working, that .444's chamber must be sloppy loose
and not within standardized industry specs.

Oh and the CASE LENGTH of the .444 Marlin
is only 2.225" length,
much shorter than even that of a 2.5" shotshell.
So if the .410 were to go in most of the way,
it would still stop a quarter inch short, when the .463 wide front end
reached the stepped-down throat of the rifle's chamber,
where from 2.225" and forward the bore is only .429" --
way too narrow for the .463 shotshell hull, even BEFORE its fired.
If the shotshell were fired, the star crimp would be blown out,
lengthening the plastic hull to 2.7". But the .444 Marlin chamber tapered dramatically back at the 2.225 inch mark!

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. i am now wondering if I am remembering it backwards in my old age. Could it have been they were shooting a 444 in a 410 shotgun? That sounds dangerous, more pressure. Wallace
