Shot placement in a self defense situation.

There was a training video posted a while back that I liked. Start out shooting center of mass, and with each shot, move up the target creeping towards the head. They were saying that in a tense moment, where the perp is high or wearing armor, you would have more effectiveness with that method than with dumping into center of mass.

what he said. I just purchased a Crimson Trace for all of these reasons. Im not gonna depend my life on my clammy shaky adrenaline pumping hands to get a perfect sight picture in a life or death situation. Put the dot center mass and walk it up. And boom goes the dynamite.

When it happens, whatever training you subject yourself to will take over and rational choice about shot placement will not occur. You can think about it now, if you are very lucky or very prepared you can think about it after, you won't think about it at the time.

We call that technique,"The zipper drill".

In one of our last Advanced classes when using high powered airsoft guns one of the students shot me once in the arm then lowered his gun.
I continued to advance & "got him" with my rubber knife.

It was a good lesson that real life defensive shootings are not like the "Cowboys & Indians or Good guys & Bad Guys games many people played as children.
While juries aren't always predictable training in failure to stop drills are important.
To paraphrase what Ayoob has said regarding self defense related legal problems , "You have to survive the encounter first. If you die then it really won't matter."

There is a tendency by many of our students (& people in general for that matter) to either ignore legal concerns or overthink them.
Conducting realistic high physical & mental stress exercises are a tremendous aid in providing your mind with the mental tools to quickly process what is the appropriate action for your body to take.

Once a high level of proficiency is achieved with ones pistol, these types of scenarios, if done properly, provide shooters with the skills necessary to win fights.... both on the street & possibly in the courtroom.

Only shooting at paper or metal targets is too one dimensional.

Contending with thinking, moving, unpredictable opponents is a whole 'nother world which is what happens in the real word of life or death encounters.

interesting to me that he switched from 45 ACP to 9mm after this encounter. i made the switch myself a few years ago, after a conversation with a buddy who is an 18 series guy. when i commented on the 'one shot stopping power' of my 45, he just said, 'well, i don't ever plan on shooting someone just once'. seems like the officer agrees that capacity is king when considering armed engagements (even though this is an outlier for sure)
