I'd imagine a gun enthusiest could get some awesome deals on some nice guns just by loitering by at gun buybacks.

I've seen several stories about this. Seems the police try to intimidate the potential sellers and buyers even though no laws are being broken. With all the legit places to sell guns, even pawn shops will give you 50%, these people doing the selling are wanting these guns destroyed.

I met a guy in a gun shop years ago who buys guns every now just to turns them over to get destroyed cause he thinks he is doing a public service

My favorite story along these lines is the NRA group in Illinois that spends years collecting useless, rusted junk guns waiting for a high dollar Chicago buyback. They did it earlier this year and raised 3K and used the money to fund a youth shooting camp.
