Son wanted a 308, now he is debating a 7mm 08! HelpAs a

308 I have several rifles just purchased browning model 81 in 308 ammo everywhere varmit or elk. That is if the punch doesn't make him flinch
THIS! I like both but prefer the .308 Win. Greater range in bullet weights and you can get it anywhere! Prices are usually better for the .308 as well!

I like and have owned multiples of both, and recommend the .308 for the same reasons others have already listed.

What's your price range?

Ditto to above.

Both the .308 and 7mm-08 are true big game rounds.
Elk, bear, moose? No Problem!!
But, they both have some recoil.
The 7mm-08 is NOT like a .243 Win.

At 400-600 yards the 7mm-08 has a flatter trajectory, but is that really important? I don't think so.

I suggedt getting a .243 now, when the kid is 13, and let him learn to be a rifleman with it for the next 5-7 years.
When he graduates from high school, get him "the last rifle he will ever need" in some caliber like .308 or .30-06, or 7mm-08 or .270 or .260 or 7mm Rem Mag.

Of the two choices offered in the original post, .308 is a lot more versatile, and ammunition available anyplace that sells ammo is America

These are good words, a .243 would be great for him to own until he gets his full growth, but perfect for Georgia Whitetails.
I just came back from Elk hunting in Colorado. I got mine with a .280 at 470 yards, my buddy's daughter got hers with a single shot .308 at about 200. Both piled up within 50 yards, good shot placement on both.
Some of the smaller bore -06 based cartridges would be better for everything in America, than .308, or 7-08, but still have less recoil, such as .260, .270, .280.
GunLaw mentioned a 7mm Rem Mag, but if a .30-06 isn't comfortable to shoot, a 7mm Mag won't be, which is why I mentioned .280, my personal choice.

7-08 is the better round for Georgia deer hunting. But it will be harder to find ammunition if you don't reload. 308 is a fine round as well and ammo is on every street corner. I have both and I will take the 7-08 as a first pick
