Suppresser recommendations for AR-15/ 5.56

Pew science is trying. Measures sound data in milliseconds and uses said data to extrapolate relative back pressure.

Otherwise its the age old convention that to quiet a rifle you have to slow and hold the gas coming out the end of the barrel. Cans that do this the best are usually quietest BUT holding that gas in means it's holding inside the barrel and gas system as well. Which means you're gonna have more gas in your face. To alleviate, some manufacturers have turned to stepped apertures in their stacks and monocores. This allows gas to escape faster BUT thats gas that makes noise out the business end. Louder can with less back pressure.

The new hotness is DMLS (direct metal laser sintering) or in layman's terms, 3D printed. These designs aren't subject to a lathe or mill and those limitations. Huxwurx and CGS have been doing this the longest. A can like the Hyperion meters as well as the nomad L or magnus but has better flow characteristics. Still restrictive but better.

At the end of the day you get sound reduction or backpressure, no free lunch.

After you decide how much you hate yourself and your friends, pick a use case. A hunting can that suppresses 20 rds a year, you want weight savings. Go titanium.

Hard use that will eat mag after mag out of your 5 inch AR? Get a wonder metal. C300, inconel or stellite. Weight is gonna be whatever since you need the heavier material and it's properties.

Need a generalist that isn't gonna see super hard use? Find a can that leverages hybrid materials so you get some weight savings but won't lose your titanium stack if you get it a little toasty. These designs (sico chimera/omega) can do a lot but short barrels and Uber magnums are a no no.

All this to say, you won't stop at 1 can. Pick a use case and buy a silencer that best fills that case
Good info and post.

Well I know this is an older post but since it's still on my first page and I have bought a suppressor for 223/556...

I almost loathe saying this but honestly my Banish 223 from silencer central essentially completely silences the blast of the rounds. I only hear the sonic effect of the round which if I understand correctly, there is no way to silence that unless you're using sub sonic ammo in suppressed firearms, and subsonic in 223 format can and probably will cause cycling issues without some investment in parts.

The loathing part comes here: SC offers no quick detach system for the Banish 223. I got shot down about it in their CS chat and that was that. It's direct thread only. Back in 2021 when they called me to say that my chosen silencer was still on backorder and gave me the sales pitch for their banish product, the guy on the phone in his best possible salesman pitch told me congrats on upgrading to the bestest greatest be all end all orgasm inducing suppressor on the face of the planet, if not the entire universe.

Now I kind of feel cheated, like they had a stockpile of them because nobody wants to use direct thread anymore and needed to unload them on some ignorant soul. Are QD really a bad idea for 223 and larger rifles? Is it a thing? or is SC being extremely lazy and cheap on offering a QD system for their banish suppressors, maybe because no one buys them to warrant it?

I mean besides the high price I've got no complaints about mine it does exactly what I wanted it to do but my obsidian 9 has made me spoiled with it's 2 part set up and accessory options. Seems kind of wrong that a $850 dollar suppressor has no QD accessories. It works so well that when I was shooting it last year and the old man was there, he put on his ear protection and I shot like 5 rounds and he was wondering why I put the gun down to start walking to the target lmao

So now I am searching for alternatives. I just wanted to say that while the banish 223 certainly works like a champion, be very aware that it is direct thread only. Because chances are extremely high if you're googling the subject, you're gonna come across it because it's the first darn thing in the search list and you should know the sacrifice for buying it. It does it's job but I would rather have something else more friendly for accessories. Sometimes it actually is kind of hard to get the thread started when attaching it....

Are those stories on the ODT?
There is way more to the gun world than odt. Suppressor sub reddit, arfcom, fb groups. There are horror stories all over on DA. Seems their CS has gotten better the past few months, but they have pumped a bunch of turds into the marketplace.
