Dang. Looking at those posts, I didn't realize I was writing an essay. It's pretty obvious that this particular subject is a touchy one and one of my biggest pet peeves.
Rant over!

I wish they handed this out at the unemployment errr... entitlement office for all the disability, welfare, and general lazy ****'s to read. guess it's easier just to hand them some of my tax dollars. I know what it's like to be poor, but have no idea what it's like to get a hand out. Have much respect for someone with your work ethic!Getting interviews doesn't mean anything. With the company I was working for before I had my own place, we were having a really hard time finding good manager candidates so we hired a company to assist us. They created an aptitude test for us based on results taken from our top performing managers, issued a personality profile, an integrity profile and conducted screening interviews sending us only the candidates that should have been the best fit. All this stuff worked really well, until I got to the final interview. One guy came in to the interview which was over an hour from where he lived and actually made a comment/complaint about how early he had to get up the be there for an interview at 9:00! Another guy started telling me procedural changes that we needed to make after having only seen the parking lot and the inside of my office. Another one was an hour and a half late and admitted that he over slept. This stuff happens every day. The one thing I realized all these people had in common was that they had all been unemployed for periods of 6 months or more. Some of them 2 years. These are people with college educations, decent resumes and good test scores yet have no idea how to function in the real world. If they were worth a damn and really wanted to work, they'd have been put to work by somebody, somewhere. If I found myself in need of a job today, I'd have one by Monday. Because if I went 3 months without one, you'd see my guns and stuff coming up for sale. In six months we'd be seriously downsizing homes and by the end of the year we'd be in the streets. If someone goes 2-3 years without employment it's only because they can. They'd rather be unemployed than be hot and sweaty punching a time clock in my body shop or bellying through crawlspaces forcaptdave77 .
I wouldn't have the option of being unemployed, so I wouldn't be.
Mainly the fact that not working has become acceptable in our society. What's your pet peeve?

I know someone who "retired" from Coca-Cola. They fired her after as many years and replaced her with someone who they paid more, but was less experienced, less qualified and less white. She "retired" very comfortably.I left Coca-Cola 6 months ago after 18 years... Became too political and the "work / family" definitely swung heavy in the wrong direction.
Was not completely ready to retire.... Decided to do contract work (Finance and IT)... Absolutely loving it...
I wish you the very best of luck... Happy to help you in any way I can....
There are a few topics that once I get going I have to back off to cool off or I'll end up saying things I shouldn't say. This is near the top of that list. If we could change these attitudes, a lot of other problems would be sorted out as a result. That's why I like Mike Rowe and his Mike Rowe Works foundation so much. He does more than anyone to bring attention to what he describes as "a disconnect between success and hard work in this country." I really admire what he's doing on this very subject.Rant on...enjoyed, related to, and appreciated.
