Turned in my notice today.

Money is number 5 on the list of things that motivate people at their job. It will only keep someone motivated temporarily. Same with the fear of getting fired. Unfortunately, those are two things that managers and owners try to use to motivate people, and why so many companies have such high turnover. Number one motivator is working for a competent supervisor.
So true! I've been in positions that paid really good money but worked for incompetent jerks, and I've been in positions that paid half the salary of previous jobs but working for great people. Bar none, working for less money with good people is far better in my opinion.

I had made my mind up that even if my boss offered a lot more money (which he tried) I was still going to go. I already accepted another job out of state in May and I've gone too far down this road to go back now.

Consider the reasons you wanted to quit in the first place. Was it mainly money? Then if they offer you more stay! Is it something else? Have something else you feel like you should be doing with your life? If that's the case, sometimes it's better to take a risk and have a chance to be doing something else that makes you feel like you're doing what you were born to do than stay and be miserable doing something you know is a dead end or a soul sucking nightmare. I'm more afraid that I will not take the chance and always wonder "what if" and would rather have made a mistake taking a risk than have the "what ifs" later. And believe me, I've made some big mistakes in my life, but I don't really regret any of them.

The nice thing is, they did not only bring money to the table. When I went down to the corp office a few weeks ago, I listed all of my reasons for wanting to leave. Money was not one of them. When they came to town this week, they told me what they wanted to do immediately,( which will take care of the majority of my issues) and what they want to do long term. Now, I have known our long term plans, they are very open about what is going on. My boss was honest and told me he would have to pay more to replace me, and offered me the chance to except the increase(plus some extra) that he would have to pay. I am really up in the air, but I like the company, love the business and I think the changes really would help with my workload and stress. Just a hard decision to make and don't want it to come back and bite me in the ass either way I choose.

Have you already got another job waiting on you? If not, it would'nt hurt to stick around a little longer to see if they come through on what they promised to do. If they do, win win. If they don't, sounds like you had already made peace with leaving, so you could just turn in your notice again.

Good point. Sounds like you're in the driver's seat. They know they need you. Maybe give it a chance if you don't already have something else.

What a nice 'problem'. Good for you. You've obviously made yourself valuable (if not indispensable). You'll make the right decision, whatever it is.

Just a quick update. I got to hire my assistant manager last week. Seems to be a solid guy. Put an order in for a new 45 ton fork lift today. Should have it by the 4th of July. And my raise was on my last check. So far they are really stepping up to bat. They are also letting me do some upgrades in our offices that have been pushed out for a few years.

Good to hear! Sounds like things are working out for the best for you!

Funny. It's kind of where I am right now. Staying for the pay.

Loved my job, the people I worked for and with. Gave them a year unwritten notice that I'd be retiring in 2011 and when time came, turned in my "Retirement Notice" .
Offered, not only more pay, but an assistant to boot.
Tempted.....NOT.
Never looked back. Happy as a fool. Built me a man cave, bought me a small tractor, became a member of a golf course, and play on ODT 2 to 3 AM most every night.
Just one suggestion to all you hard working "employee's" out their. Keep paying into SS. Raises out here in retirement land is few and far between.
