Visiting Germany in August - Advice

When I was in Berlin I had just enough time to visit the Iron Curtain museum near Checkpoint Charlie. We have no idea what East German people would do to escape to freedom in those days. FYI - Countries in Europe tend to go on month long vacations (yes the whole country ). You might need to plan ahead to avoid crowds.

Marienplatz is the main square in Munich. The Glockenspiel, a clock tower that houses motorized figurines is located in the Square. Stop by the Hofbrauhaus for a beer. I was there for Octoberfest back in my single days.

yep you got to stop there and get the big mug of brew!!!! There is also one in Berlin you can hit both!!!!

I spent a few years over there in the military and loved it what I could see. We spent so much time fighting the Cold War that time to tour and such was at a premium.
I took this picture of a Monastery near Munich in the early seventies. There is a lot to see and so little time.

Your intinerary is excellent.
Also take a Rhine River mini cruise, or at least tour one of the vinyards along it; the Reisling and Sect (types of wines) are great.
See one of the representative castles; it really doesn't matter which one (although the one in Heidleberg along Philosphers Walk is particulary great).

Please be mindful that the Germans can be shameful of the Nazi past. Take an interest in some of the places that modern Germans (ie, your hosts) are particularly proud.

You'll have a blast, I promise!

Berlin has some nice historical places to visit, while there earlier this year took a tour of a Nuclear Bunker which was interesting. Eagles Nest was fun!!! Trip Advisor has a good listing you can use as well. Stay away from the crowds, especially at night. Lots of pick pockets out in the tourists areas.
x2 on Berlin. Definitely worth exploring!

Rothenberg one of the best medieval cities in Europe
Fredrichsbad at Baden Baden. A bath experience like no other. Do it.
