I've seen some pretty 1903's and this one is a wallflower at best based off of what I've seen out there.

Not sure if it's real corrosion or some kind of coating/preservative that I could remove to restore her to her former glory...

She looks great. I would MAYBE leave her in the sun when its hot...just see if it melts off. Clean, Shoot and Clean the bore....rinse and repeat.

brass brush on the bore.Rubbing alcohol on a rag but heating it up might be safest way.

Yeah, my first thought was heat gun with a judicious amount of heat applied...

Probably LIN-SPEED oil. Was a favorite for inspections on stocks in the 60s.

That's what we did ours in, hand rubbed until your hands were blistered......

Looks like someone brushed varnish on it. Probably will need to,be stripped and then rubbed with boiled linseed oil.

If it's linseed oil (or some version such as Tru-Oil) it should come off with mineral spirits, and some 0000 steel wool. I wouldn't use any more aggressive solvent because it might take off any underlying stain.
