What vehicle would you buy to drive 85 miles a day in Atlanta?

I had a 2020 Ford Escape as a company auto for three years. Had a peppy 2.0 4 cylinder EcoBoost engine. I put about 40k miles on it with no issues. Handled nicely as well.

What newish vehicle would you buy if you suddenly had a new job that required an 85 mile round trip commute 3 or 4 days a week in Atl traffic? Nothing with a CVT tranny and would like to stay under $18-$20k and less than 70,000 miles on it. I was eyeballing Chevy Malibus but see GM went to a CVT tranny in 2019. I have not kept up with the latest junk that’s been pushed out the door the last 4 or 5 years so I don’t really know where to start.
I would worry less about a transmission and more about a safety rating and gas mileage. Find something that gets at least 25 miles/gal and a five star rating, with low overall maintenance. That leaves you in the world of Toyota

I know you won’t want to hear this but I had a similar commute of stop and go in Utah. During that time and a fair amount of time here in GA I had a Chevy Volt. I know, I know, electric bad blah blah blah. But it has the onboard gas motor too. Not going to win any races but I put well over 100k miles on it in my ownership. Great mileage and literally only had to replace consumable items. If I still had a commute, I’d definitely reinvest in one.

GM car transmissions have been weak for a long time. I'd be shopping for a 5-10 year-old Toyota Camry or Corolla.

Absolutely a Camry. New or old.
When we lived in Oahu, we had a ‘99 Camry. It came over from the mainland with 244k. Other than it changing its own oil very slowly, literally everything worked all the way to the day we moved back to the mainland. Had over 300k when we sold it.
