My opinion is based on the Ruger Minis from a couple of decades ago. Accuracy was terrible, reliability was so so.
I think it boils down to form or function?
Most AKs have so many functional advantages over the Ruger mini that a fella wouldn't even know where to start.
So many variants that you may want to use some google fu and gain some knowledge on how to pick out a good unit.
Just as a really good combination of cost, quality and reliability I like the Chinese MAKs.

you can correct me on this if I'm wrong but two very different rifles and two very different ammo..... ak you can use all the cheap imported ammo but the mini uses American made .308" size bullets only.... imported 7.62x69 is not .308"

AK .311, can use .308 projectiles if have too....

got me curious so i measured some hornaday, Winchester and federal factory 7.62x39 ammo and they all measured .311

Great feedback. I have plenty of hunting rifles but I am very fond of the 7.62x39 round and my next rifle will be chambered for that. My use will be range, shtf and possibly a backup hunting rifle. I am tired of Googleing about both of them so I wanted opinions from here.

SHTF? Really? Come on man, there is no question here. If you dropped me off on planet x with dinosaurs and aliens, I would want an AK and Sept 1988 Penthouse magazine.

Ak all day every day....a good quality Arsenal or Chinese Mak90 is hard to beat and has many different uses. People that aren't "AK Guys" often don't get how versatile an AK can be....I recently took a buddy out that had a previous experience with a poor quality AK....We shot my Mak90 and Arsenal SA93 and he was dumbstruck....
