Why did this timing belt fail at only 60k miles?

Looking at that engine I’d suspect the belt had oil leaking on it somehow. No way that should have that much dirt and oil on a 60k motor. Also on that head I see something between the valves on the farthest right. Picture quality isn’t good enough to get a close up look. What is that?

You mean that piece of hair?

The valve cover gasket was seeping a little bit because I overtightened it.. It was mostly getting the back side of the block dirty so I didn't really pay much attention to it because it didn't use much oil. I do see that a little bit of it got into the timing cover but I'm not sure if that was before or after I pulled it apart. The belt itself did not feel like it was covered in oil

Meh….at least you get to re-seal everything and clean it all up, check it out good and all.
(trying to look on the ‘bright side’ of things - lol )

I did find a couple of cracked hoses while I was pulling it apart. Now is also a good time for me to put a helicoil in the valve cover bolt hole that I stripped out

Was driving my Honda on the way to the gym this morning when it suddenly quit and I had to get it towed home. Didn't take me long to find the problem but I built this engine 6 years ago and it only has 60,000 miles on it. I was really surprised at how worn and cracked the belt was. It has never overheated however it is a manual and I do like rev matching and double clutching when I downshift. Nothing crazy though, it's a bone stock engine. It's a Honda 2.2 VTEC which unfortunately is an interference engine. What do you suppose the odds are that a piston didn't hit a valve?

My oem one broke in my favorite Honda….a 96 prelude with sjj in Milan miles. Ended up banging into the valves and had to have a valve job. Never was the same.

No, the right one has some kind of damage around the spark plug hole. The valve is lower in the head as well. Make sure your machine shop is really good and doesn’t just refresh it and spit it out.
I suspect that you will be better served with a new reman head.

I think that's just the reflection from a bit of oil but I'm not sure. A guy that I fly with just opened his own machine shop and he has been building racing engines his entire career. I'm going to take it to him to have it checked out

Yeah it’s hard to get a good look in a 2d picture, no matter what the quality.
A good machinist can work miracles on a head, but they are expensive.
I’ve seen where race heads broke valves on huge shots of NO2 turning the heads into what looked like a drunken gremlin with a blow torch and an axe stayed there for months. LOL. When they were repaired they looked as good as new, and they kept racing.
