Why would anybody buy a 38 special

Ugh... the FBI wasn't looking at 357 snubbies. Those numbers were from 6" and 4: barreled guns.

The "velocity" numbers being cited are advertised numbers, real world is a whole nother story.

Does anyone know what caliber is the number one mankiller in the US? But, but, but, but..............

Don't "ugh" me. You and I were talking about .357 snubs vs .38 snubs in a power comparison, and NOTHING else. You keep trying to change the subject, in an effort to save face in a ridiculous argument to begin with, and cannot give any explanation or proof whatsoever that any .38 spl can compare to ANY .357 magnum. It just isn't there man, so give it up. A .357 magnum snub, with lackluster ammo, pushing 1,250+ fps (at a minimum) is still more powerful than practically any common handgun. Is it the most practical carry gun? No, not even close, for a guy like me, but it is more powerful. That's the way it is. And I don't even own a .357 magnum at this time, but it IS more powerful. For ****s sake.

This is why everyone of us good guys in the 21st century should be carrying .357 Sig... But of course, according to some of us, it is the equivalent of the .25 acp. Smh...

A 357 needs some barrel length to be effective... in a snubby that's just not there.

Check out "Ballistics By The Inch". It's a great site where they test different ammo by starting out with a longer barrel, then lopping off an inch and retesting.

You'll see that the 9mm can significantly outperform the 357 with a 2" barrel, and at worst is break-even.

LOL...My goodness....A snub .357, with even the most lackluster ammo, outperforms any 9mm no matter the barrel length. We all have our sources, but I trust the my own testing, plus the proven testing of others that I have already posted in this thread....And just so you will know, I carry a G19 everyday, or a S&W 638, and I do not even own a .357 magnum at this time, so I like those options better for carry, but I will not pretend they are as powerful...They are not.

I carry a snub .38 Special in a console holster as a car gun. I believe if I have to use it, I will be shooting one-handed from inside the car. The compactness and lightness makes it easier to access and put into action with one hand. The fact that it is a revolver means I don't have to contend with hot brass ricocheting around inside the car. The recoil of a .38 Special is much more controllable for multiple one-handed shots than a .357 Magnum would be. I also believe my ears might better survive the concussion of the less powerful round being fired inside the car.

If I have time to exit the car in a defensive scenario, disregard all of the above. In that instance, I will be going to my IWB concealed EAA Witness in .38 Super. That's a different caliber for a different discussion. :D

I'm done with this. I won't get into a caliber debate, especially one as ridiculous as this one. When guys actually believe a .38 or 9mm are as powerful as a .357 magnum, no matter the platform being used, they are either trolling or delusional. That's all there is to that.

To stay on topic, I like .38 and carry one often.

I said I was done with this, and I hope I am, but since the ridiculous argument of 9mm and .38 SPL vs .357 magnum will not die, I will gladly continue to ridicule those who refuse to concede the inevitable, not to mention the obvious...

I am not a ballistics expert, not even close, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that the weakest .357 magnum is vastly more powerful than the most powerful .38 SPL or a 9mm....Honestly, I am having a hard time believing we are even having this conversation on the ODT...

We are talking about power, not practicality. Or at least, I am...Some prefer to change the subject...

A handgun chambered for .38 Special can be manufactured smaller and lighter than a similar handgun in .357 Magnum.

Yet even in a full size 1911 platform it is still equal to .357 magnum in a snub platform, at around 1,250 fps, with perhaps less foot pounds of energy...? When you have a 4" barrel with a .357 magnum it outperforms the .38 super by a minimum of 200 fps, which is a lot, IMO, and those are minimal #'s...Same thing with a .357 SIG...It smokes the .38 super...And I like the .38 super, but I like .357 Sig more...

Rob, I respect your knowledge and experience as much as anyone, and you have forgotten more than I will ever know, but I believe you have been carrying the best handgun caliber, in your dept, all along.

Another reference, and worth watching for all of us...This made me a believer. .357 Sig friggin rules.
