Small collection of World War II coins from my grandfather. These are not for sale. I’m just posting for information if you have anything to share I’d like to hear it. Thank you.

A few reichsmarks, a Norwegian 5 Øre, a 1923 polish 20 groszy, and a Russian 15 kopeck. By far one of the most interesting ones is the 1920’s kingdom of Italy 10 centesimi bee coin. These are starting to go up in price and yours appears to be in exceptional shape. Your grandfather did well to preserve them.

Great information. Thank you. I was interested in numismatics as a boy and today remember nothing. These coins have always captured my imagination. Can you recommend a resource, online, local shops etc.

To indulge you for a second…According to Family lore (we are not really a military family with a ton of stories) but my grandfather was captured by Rommel’s forces in North Africa but the coin evidence suggests, to me, he had been before in central Eastern Europe and as far north as Scandinavia. Our family lore isn’t always perfect. Lol.

Richard M. Johnson Louisville, KY. Army, Conscripted. Regular Infantry, I presume , he made it home stateside but perished within several years due to a blood clot in the brain ostensibly attributed to malnutrition and harsh circumstances while a POW. God Bless. I never knew him.

I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience

Best regards

Brett Johnson

I’m sorry I never knew his rank or anything. Family history is beguiling sometimes. As a undocumented sidebar, my sister tells me she heard great aunts say, ahem, R. Johnson was a good ol’ Kentucky rabble rouser. At that point I can’t discern lore from life. Probably better left alone. Thanks again.
