I just called the Community Relations Chief (706)-545-2238. He said they are no longer doing this event because of budget cuts and cost of ammo.

Did PR say the event for this month is cancelled or that the HOTEX has been cancelled as a program? I know there was concern about crowd size getting out of check if word got out this was the LAST one, but maybe it was cancelled all together. I will see if there is some inside scoop I can pick up on base.

He said the last event was March 15th and there would be no more going forward. Maybe if more of us call and express an interest things could change?? Who would have thought the Army would have to cancel an event because of the cost of ammo  I guess the budget for ammo these days is going to the DHS.

BAD NEWS: Confirmed today what Tom already knew. HOTEX for civilians has been cancelled for this month and there is not another scheduled for the foreseeable future. If things change while I am here at Benning and the budget allows for this again I will post it here for the community. Currently there has been a lot of public concern over noise levels from tank battle drills and you would think this reaching out to the community would remain a priority, but a mere mortal like me can never understand the inner-workings of Big Army. Sorry to have got our hopes up over this.

In other news this week is the Best Ranger competition here on post. If watching guys beat themselves into the ground physically is your thing, you don't want to miss it! There will be guys jumping from helicopters into water, rope work, shooting, swimming/ boating, and of course plenty of running/marching. Lot's of good folks will be in town all week and a few legendary soldiers including medal of honor recipients will be present at several events.
Oh and I did ask one of the NCO's that run the range if I could "sneak in 10 or 20 people from my gun group" at the range to fire some cannon or .50's. He just looked at me and shook his head. Never hurts to try!
