I didn't want to spend $30 or $40 on the grit crayons for my stop block so I figured I'd try something else. An $11 tub of rubbing compound seems to work just fine and I don't think I will ever use up the tub

Kinda, only much finer. More for polishing the edge. .5 micron is about 30,000 grit equivalent. I use it to touch up a dull straight razor. It's a bit overkill for a knife.
