18yr old daughter is starting college and needs a self defense weapon. Guns on campus are out so what is the best self defense weapon?

No it's probably not legal. Either way make your own choices and accept the risks.

An 18-year-old guy would sure. An 18-year-old girl can turn on the tears and explain how scared she was for her own safety. She would get a slap on the wrist if anything at all.
She was scared when she chose to carry illegally? Did she make a police report or even tell any of her friends why she was so terrified that she willingly committed a felony? Any half competent prosecutor would tear her apart.

Why would having some training automatically give someone a false sense of security?
Being more physically fit is a bad thing? That can't be part of a layered defense?
How many rapists expect their victim to fight back?
Because they over estimate their ability to successfully defend themselves. I've seen it dozens of times in the classes I taught. It makes them too often choose "Fight" when they should be choosing "Flight". They think their odds are better if they stand their ground and they simply aren't.

My daughter attended college in Baltimore. Two major events occurred in her general vicinity. The row house on the corner across the street from her was a fraternity house. A young man sleeping on a downstairs sofa was stabbed to death by an intruder. No arrests were ever made to my knowledge. She and her roommates woke up to police everywhere.

2) Walking home from class in the middle of the day she walked up on a armed robbery in progress. Thankfully she was behind the robber. Smart girl. She lay down and crawled under a car to hide then dialed 911. Perp never saw her but he fled before the police arrived. She was taught to stay off her phone, not to wear earbuds and keep her head on a swivel.

As far as training, preparedness and any stats you throw out about what rarely happens or is unlikely to happen, I say prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Then if the best happens you can celebrate your good fortune but if the worst happens you stand a fighting chance.

Well then I guess she needs to decide who she is more afraid of, the legal system or everyone else in the world.

Besides, if the police are so effective then what does she have to worry about? Surely they will step in and save her if anything bad happens.

Oooor, she figures out how to defend herself without committing a daily felony. That's what this thread is about.

My reference to a police report just went right over your head.

How else do you suggest a 120lb 18yr old girl defend herself against a 6ft 200lb+ man?

Not sure how you're supposed to file a police report because bad people exist.

Pepper spray and a good knife with some training. Gee, where have I heard that before?

You're still not getting the thing about the police report.

My daughter moves into her dorm on the campus of UGA on Saturday. I am apprehensive because she has grown up in a protective environment. I have talked to her about safety. Ive talked to her about walking with a buddy and have a few older friends who have said call me I’ll walk with you. I’ve talked to her about parties and drink spiking. They are preached to about this from the school and such. Hopefully she will surround herself with good friends who look out for one another. That said the time she had alcohol she wasn’t a fan. That life isn’t attractive to her. That will go along way in protecting her. I know she will make bad choices I know her dad. I will hope that good choices, situational awareness, a can of Pom spray and a praying daddy will be enough.

Ok. You're right. Pepper spray and a knife are just as good.

I think you are talking about a police report to establish a history of problems with a certain person. My point was that you can't do that for someone who hasn't attacked you yet.
