Not likely. You can put a spit wad in a rubber band and make a clean hole.With 1/2-28 threads, there is basically no crown on the barrel, so I wouldnt even worry about that.
My theory is that you are hitting paper with a pointy, slow moving bullet. Its tearing the paper instead of punching a clean hole in it.
With any other caliber, I'd agree with you - but - 300BLK is a different animal. It is designed for total powder ignition in around 9" of barrel. So actually a 16" barrel could actually be slower than a 9" barrel given friction over 7" and the lack of propellant gases.Is your ammo subsonic in a 16" barrel? If so, it will be real slow out of your short barrel.
Too slow, and it will not stabilize.
