I see they mention that the filter has to "share" the serial of the device. Does that mean it's married to the device? I thought I read that the outside of a suppressor must be the numbered section. But I guess technically this is "outside" as well?

I wouldn't mind getting one to play with if the filters can be replaced. I do have concerns with a wide oil filter body on a pistol though.

It works great on a pistol with a high optic, like a Ruger 22/45 with a red dot riding up top. You can see clear over. You do wanna find the longest filter possible though. The short ones don't suppress sound as well.

Oh, and you're perfectly free to swap the filters. As far as the device is concerned, it's what you would call a "disposable wipe."

JW I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. Wipes are not serialized and the ATF defines them as "nothing more than a rubber or plastic disc with a hole in it" See:http://www.titleii.com/bardwell/atf_letter66.txt. Wipes are in addition to a tube, for additional suppression, not the tube itself. Without a wipe a suppressor still functions. Oil filters are a tube with what could be called "baffles" in it, essentially the main guts of normal suppressors. Serializing the filter is essentially saying that it is a suppressor part. Having multiple suppressor parts with no approved suppressor to go with it is a big no no unless you are an 07/02.

Even if it was not a "part" in the eyes of the ATF now, who knows if they will still say that tomorrow. See: Akins accelerator, RPB MAC Coke-bottle adapters, etc. With the current state of affairs and leadership at the BATFE, I would not touch one of those with a 10' pole.

At the end of the day if you keep your mouth shut and head down, I'm sure no one would mess with you. But if you did get in trouble for something else, and they really wanted to give it to you good, I could see this being thrown on top.

Also, please don't take this as me agreeing with the BATFE. If you pay the tax and register it (which i dont agree with either) then you should be able to do what you want because you are doing your due diligence.

I agree with everything you said. But I still contend that, at least in the eyes of the ATF, right now, they have approved the serialized adapter as the "suppressor" without regard to what is attached to the end of it. It's not technically a wipe, but as of July 12, 2012, it is still being treated as such.

agreed. Right now they say you are A-OK.

I just think its a stretch to say they will always treat a round piece of neoprene the same as a threaded, metal, cardboard canister

Wrong, the ATF has approved the serialized adapter, but they have never decided that the oil can is a wipe. It has no qualities of a wipe, it is a tube and baffles in one, both items cannot be replaced without SOT.

Thats what I am talking about the oil cans are NOT WIPES. They can not be replaced by individuals, you would have to send it to an 07/02 for replacement as it is considered a baffle.

Only wipes can be replaced by the end user. ATF has said many times that wipes are plastic/foam/rubber/neoprene not metal.

granted you can buy a solvent trap which is the exact same item but no serial number so that all your hoppes stays in one place, but alas this is essentially vaporware at this point and retarded. Spend $275 (after tax stamp) total for oil can crap that you cant replace legally or just spend a little more for a real can that is user serviceable, lets you see your sights, warranted for life, and won't get you laughed out of the NFA community $400(after tax stamp) hunter town arms available from SemperFi arms (wwboater).

As for the determination on the oil can portion.. Have they actually decided that it has the same qualities (legally) as a baffle stack? Or is it just up in the air still? (no determination made)
