Old original Gerber from the late 80's, early 90's in my pocket now and every day. So I'd say yes, they're still a thing.

Leatherman Rebar on me daily, but I often have to fix things in the field without much in the way of tools. Wire cutters are replaceable and have cut through large gauge chicken wire without issues.

I’ve used Leatherman Supertool for close to 30 years. If I am home, I have much better tools but the Leatherman is good to have around when I can’t get to a toolbox. There is no substitute for having a basic toolset though.

I need something to cover the basics and I'm not sure if a multi-tool is it. I had a Gerber 25 years ago and it was good but technology moves fast. What is a good one? I need the pliers and screwdriver part mostly. I carry a good knife so that part is covered.

I usually carry a Leatherman Wave plus for just the reasons you describe. Adding a pocket clip is what made it work for me. The OEM belt holster is too much trouble.
