I have been looking at the 80 - 89 trucks (preferably step side). V-8 a must. I only say that because of the inline 6's I have heard about in some of these. . .

I hear ya. I love some Ford Lightnings' , though...
The Chevy C10 truck from that time frame will be more popular. But from what I've seen they will also be more prone to rust in the door bottoms and below the doors. My older daughter has a 94 F150 that used to be a DNR game warden truck. It's. Short bed 4wd with manual window and locks and vynil covered floors. To me that's the perfect truck. Well now it does have the 5.0 engine and I prefer the 300 inline 6. But aside from that it's the perfect truck even though you can clearly see where the stickers used to be.
Even though I dig Fords I'd say be different and go with a mid to late 80s Dodge short bed with the 318. The Chevy trucks are done to death.
CL has a square body with no motor has TH350 and headers for $1000.
