Many years ago as a kid working in a gun shop I would roll my eyes when folks would walk in with a new thirdy thirdy they bought at Kmart along with a 4-12 Redfield accu Trac and want me to mount the scope for them. I was always of the mindset of folks here. A 4x was all you needed. Skip forward 40 years and now I can see crap 10 minutes before sun set. I now under stand optics a little better. You can’t shoot what you can’t see. Though I may still opt for a lower magnification, I would suggest don’t skimp on optics. 30mm tubes and larger objectives. That Marlin is now a $1200 + gun. Don’t put a $200 scope on it. Save your Pennys and opt for $800-1200 scope. You can’t kill what you can’t see.

What scope would you suggest? I bought this stainless Leupold but can always sell it and buy a better one.

Any modern scope will be better than the mid tier scopes of the early 2000s. Glass engineering and coatings have come a long way. With that being said a larger objective is always going to be better for image quality and light transmission.

That’s an excellent scope. I’ve got the same one on a stainless Ruger no1 257. The cross hairs get a little hard to see at dusk though. Leupold makes a model VX6 HD 1-6 with illumination that I’m currently saving for to put on a 700 build in .358 win. Again a bit pricey. I keep trying to catch a used one on another forum that has a lot of optic traffic. But with nearly $5 a gallon gas I seem to not be saving enough pennys fast enough.

A good 2-7x is the perfect range for a 30-30. That'll give you a 200-yard option if you should ever get the opportunity. Only if you're confident in your skills enough to take that kind of shot and make sure it's a Humane kill. It never hurts to have a little more power than you need just in case. A 3-9 x 40 is too much magnification on the 30-30. That's just Overkill. If you're looking for a good budget job The Vortex Crossfire 2-7×30 scope is a decent little piece on the cheap. If you're looking to spend a little more then Burris has an excellent scope in the 2-7 range it's around 399 depending on where you look it's light and compact perfect for a 30-30. They also have a 2-7x scout model which is under 200.
