I got my wife a plate cover because she has a lead foot and the Jeep's in my name. They work but only for a couple of years before the coating wears off. You have to replace them or respray them after 2-3 years

Capture a license plate? Okay. I don't love it, but it's a publicly issued document, in use on a public roadway. Without a warrant, use should be limited to automated searches for reported stolen vehicles, active manhunts, etc. Any other investigative access should require a warrant.

On the other hand...pictures gathered from a government operated network of cameras, of cars, pedestrians, bikes, etc., into a persistent database that can be used to track individuals without a warranty? Blatant violation of the 4th Amendment and prevailing case law.

My opinion is they should use technology to trim out anything but the license plate.
I'm pretty sure no warrant is necessary to film anything in plain view in public.

It's what they do.
It's what they want to do, but they're kinda retarded and outdated and there inefficiency plays in our favor. Elon is gonna clean all that up though, give them the best AI surveillance systems possible. Of course there will be rules in place to keep the government from abusing these tools

Most newer cars/trucks have DCM's, Data Communication Modules, that collect data about speed, braking, location, etc. that they sell to insurance companies. Data collection about you is everywhere.

FLOCK cameras were instrumental in nabbing the folks who broke into Dahlonega Gold and Pawn a few months ago. IIRC - Break in at 0400 in Dahlonega, arrests by 0730 in Dallas, GA.
