Getting a ragtop...Audi A4 or Mercedes 320 Cabriolet?

Nope. I love the old Brick Volvos that were rear wheel dr8ve. But I've seen way too many S60 and S80 models with blown engines.
Here's a pick that I think we all forgot about. If you want the Mercedes drive train without paying for the badges then why not consider a Crossfire? The advantage I see there is since they were discontinued the prices fell and they have probably already bottomed out on depreciation. They're good looking cars too.

Roadster. Too small for what I want. Besides, it's really not about the drive train. For me owning a Mercedes is about owning a Mercedes. Which I may never do from the looks of it. The CLK320 looks good but the only ones I've found in my price range that were 4 seaters were an '01 and an '02. And since the C series is the base model, it makes it less attractive than the BMW 330Ci or the Sebring Limited, or possibly even the Volvo C70. And again, the BMWs I have found are all soft top and older than the Sebring and Volvo, both of which have bigger trunks, hard tops and lots of interior space.

How bout an El Dorado? I love the ones from the 90s and early 00s. The ragtops were coach works built and they're not all that many of them but I like them. Only downside is stay away from anything with the Northstar engine
I didn't even know they were still making the El Dogs after '75. Those monsters used to rip asphalty off the streets back in the 70's. LOL

I owned a red 73 ragtop for one day back when I was 17. But the trans cooler was inside the radiator and rusted out so the fluids were mixing together. Took it back to the lot I bought it from in Warner Robins and the owner let me trade I back to him even for a 78 Fiat Spider in Ox Blood Burgundy. When I told him I wanted the Fiat he looked at me like I was psychotic. I just wanted a convertible and didn't care. The ELDO was awesome to behold though. It was like a full size sofa in front and love seat in the back. It had a 5 HUNDRED cubic inches V8. If I could have any old ragtop right now it would be a late 60s Seville.

So anyway I got home with the Fiat and my mom said Hell No! She said I would die in that car. And I responded with " Yeah, so what?!"

LOL! I got to "Fiat Spider" and I thought you were psychotic! Laughing my ass off thinking of what a contrast you put up driving in in an El Dog and out in a door stop. Yeah. Big block madness and a FRONT WHEEL DRIVE! LOL.

As for my dream car it would be a '69/70 drop top Chevy Impala SS with a 327.

Why the Hard top route?

Adds weight and no trunk space.

Again, test drive a M3 or 650i rag top, with top down and top up, and check the trunk space.

Bet you have a different attitude. I did.

Even the Mercedes ragtop has nice trunk space with top down and good sound levels with the top up.

if your going german go 328 e46 get something well maintained and it will be good to you, they can be a bit more expensive to repair but are more reliable than the other germans. the benz when it breaks will kill you in costs and dont even get me started on the audi, we have an 06 a3 and i ****ing hate that car.

btw your missing the best convertables out there

Mercedes might cost an arm and a leg to fix, but at least it only breaks once. Fix it and the problem is over.
