Has anyone ever washed their guns?

A family member washed a .357 revolver (blued steel, wood stocks) in the top-loading washer once, and even dried it (partially; the gun made a lot of noise and thus it was taken out to finish drying on a window sill.)

Gun was quickly oiled afterward.
The revolver survived with no damage other than some of the oils came out of wood grips and made them look a few shades lighter, more pale.

We would take the receiver from the M2 Browning and M240 MG and fill it with shaving cream. Let it sit for a while, then pressure spray it clean. Air compressor blast the moisture out, air dry, then oil. Our Platoon's weapons always passed inspection.

Cleaning the lowers on the M4 was the same, except no pressure sprayer, just hot water from a sink.
