well I guess its time to replace the old work van, shes only a few years shy of 40 years old, and shes lost her get up n go, tranny went out and she been smoking , burning oil and loosing power for a while now. so wheres the best place to get a good used van at a decent price, all the ones im seeing on the web are worn out and have a gilzzion miles on them

Crate motor? If the frame and body are in good shape and set up the way you like, For a fraction of the cost of a newer commercial van and a weekend's worth of wrenching you could have a new old van.

But if not. Craigslist is pretty good.

depends on how many miles you drive, a used Sprinter may pay for itself in fuel savings.

friend of mine is a plumber and his sprinter gets 18 mpg compared to the 9 mpg his old van got.

That's the main problem with trucks and work vans. Nobody sells or trades them in until they're worn out. And none of the big three make traditional looking vans like they used to. It might be worth looking at city\county\state government auctions online to find one.

I wouldn't buy a Sprinter, we've run around 20, and once they start to go wrong parts and costs are a real challenge.

We've run a 2004 Chevy Express 2500 up to 320,000 miles before selling it to a buddy of mine who still uses it to transport his dirt bike to the track for weekend races. We had a 2006 Chevy Express 1500 that got to just shy of 200,000 before trading it in. After having two Chevy Express traditional work vans and leaning over and crawling around in it and only getting 12-15 mpg we will never go back. Now we have a 2006 Dodge Sprinter with 368,000 miles which gets 20-22mpg loaded and 28 mpg unloaded. Being able to stand up and walk around inside it is worth it's weight in gold. We also have a 2012 Freightliner Sprinter with 240,000 miles which only gets are 15-17 mpg average due to the new DEF emissions control but still not bad. Then not long ago we added a 2014 Freightliner Sprinter which is coming up on 200,000 miles and again the emissions controls tank the mileage but overall the vans are great. I would like to test out the new Ford and see how they perform but the new Dodge Promax or whatever i would not touch with a 10 foot pole.
