How many HAM radio operators here?

There are a number of places, however you should get your ticket (license). Many ham radio operators don't want to encourage the use of HAM equipment by non licensed individuals. The standards are higher than CB. Do a google search for HAM radio VE's in your county, then contact one and they should be able to get you set up and point you in the right direction for equipment.

Not one yet, but have been with a guy while he was making contact with the International Space Station (NA1SS) talking to one of the astronauts which is freaking awesome....

73's

As stated previously in this thread........I'm not a HAM yet. I'm studying now for the test..........finally.

However, I do have a sweet 11meter station set up. I was talking the some guys in the West Indies last night.

What kind of money are you looking at to buy a used complete set up to get started ?

I've been researching this too.

First it depends on what you want from your station. 2 meter is a good place to start. You can get a good NEW 2 meter transceiver for under $200.

Here's a good 2 meter radio. http://www.hamcity.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=122&idproduct=1827

From the research I've done this seems like a solid transceiver. Eham.com gave it some solid reviews.

You'll need an antenna and coax too. I currently run LMR 400 with PL259 plugs on my 11 meter rig. LMR 400 will work on a 2 meter rig too.

Here's a 2 meter beam antenna for around $100. http://www.hamcity.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=223&idproduct=456

You can buy or find some iron pipe and attach it to that if you want. My dad has two 20ft pieces of iron pipe bolted together for a 40ft antenna pole........works great and cost less than a tower.......easier to put up too.

Here's 50ft of LMR 400 with PL259's for $68. http://cgi.ebay.com/LMR-400-Marine-...390?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35ac8a2186

Next you'll want an SWR meter. It was kinda hard to find a link for an SWR meter designed for a 2 meter base station........maybe a HAM thing I dont know about.

Anyhow found this one....$100. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Top-Line-SW...ultDomain_0&hash=item4aa4fc984e#ht_5525wt_982

Okay lets see here.......we've got:

Tranceiver: $175
Antenna: $100
Coax: $68
SWR Meter: $100
Iron Pipe Pole: $??

I think it's safe to say that you could build a working station for around $500

I've had my Tech license for 11 years now. I was 14 when I got it. I used to be a member of the NWGARC in Rome. I also used to have a base 2m antenna on a pole, a scanner antenna on a pole, a cb antenna in a tree, and a home-made di-pole strung up for shortwave/HF ham listening. I also had a home-made 2m antenna in the attic and a car battery in a box outside my bedroom window ran to my base 2m to use during bad weather. I had a 2m/440 rig, cb, and scanner in my truck.

I don't get on much any more, and don't have much equipment. I do still have a 2m HT and I check in to some nets now and then.

I would like to upgrade to General which I could do easy enough and get into some HF DX, but I am broke, no way I can afford that equipment. Eventually though.
