How many HAM radio operators here?

Don't know about price or that particular model. I have owned. Yaesu dual band radios and they were top notch. Have you checked the price with online ham radio outlets.. There is a ham store on Buford highway.

Well, I won an ICOM V8000 2m for $187...I'll use this puppy to learn the program then I may consider stepping up...Thanx for the advice!

Joining a group of amateur radio operators is a good way to learn.
There are emergency support groups (ARES and RACES) plus hobby groups.
Here in Cherokee County we have both types of groups and a very supportive and involved EMA director.
Cherokee County ARES and the Cherokee Amateur Radio Society meet at a fire station community center in the south end of the county.

Great bunch and there are enough VE's to schedule testing sessions when needed.

Next meeting will be in April.

BTW: A program called FLDIGI allows you to do CW (morse code) and several different digital modes to communicate.
CW is no longer required so I was able to upgrade from tech to General despite my lack of a musical ear to differentiate the tones in CW.

You can even send and receive an e-mail without using the internet when band conditions are right.
Just getting into the digital modes so I have not done that yet.

PM me for more info on local activities if interested.

i would like to get into it, i was into cb with upper and lower sideband back in the 1980s then again in the late 1990s still miss it. never had 2 meter band.
