I have the ammo on the shelf, but I won't sell it to you?

I have run in to that several times. The counter guy said it's hard to sell a gun you can't get ammo for. Being in retail sales for years in my youth I can completely relate to that. It could make or break a deal with just one box of ammo with your brand new gun. Also a customer might be hesitant if he hears " I don't have any ammo for your gun ".

Ed's is the same. I was there picking up a pistol many months ago and they said they don't sale any ammo unless a person buys a gun. I didn't need any 9mm, but they allowed me to get my Uncle some .380.

Yesterday, I hit a few gun stores looking for some ammo and reloading components (if there were any to be had). I stopped in one shop and noticed they had factory 7mm-08 on the shelf behind the counter. When I inquired what kind of 7mm-08 they had, store owner replies, "We have Hornady American Whitetail (20 boxes), Prvi Partizan (30 boxes), and another brand (I had never heard of)." I noticed there were 3 other boxes pushed to the back side of the shelf and asked about them. Shop keeper tells me they are 2 boxes of Fusion 140s and a box of Federal Premium ballistic tips. He said those pushed to the back of the shelf are not for sale unless someone buys a rifle. I asked if he would part with 1 box of Fusions, and he said No.

His shop, his rules I get that, but why couldnt he just hold back some Hornady for his customers who purchased a rifle?

I thought it was kind of strange. Granted, a store owner who doesnt have any ammo to sell when someone purchases a gun, very well might hinder the gun sale, but to hold back specific ammo? I dont get it. Any thoughts???

Simple, he keeps that for himself in case someone tries any funny business.
