Is there a semi auto 7.62x39 that’ll group…

Years ago I remember finding a company that would take your Ruger Mini-30, charge you a large amount of money, and promise 1.25" at 100 yards with American made ammo. I didn't take them up on it so I can't attest to whether it worked or not; but apparently they believed it is possible, but only with quality ammunition.

My experience is that the ammo you shoot plays a big role in accuracy. Shooting Russian steel case FMJ or HP, 2-3" at 100 yds is probably great. Try shooting some Hornady 123gr SST stuff and you will see your groups tighten up. When you can tell the difference on an indoor range, you know there is a difference. However, deer don't appreciate being shot with either the SST or HP ammo.

7.62x39 is a tough one to get precision from. I think the Commie rifles came with a .311 bore..and American rifles come with a .308 bore..so you can pull your hair out trying to get a mil-surp 7.62x39 to group..IMO. I’ve had a couple of SKS’s that I cut the barrel down to Paratrooper length,Recrowned the barrel, did a DIY (Kivaari style)trigger job+ Mcarbo springs..to get a “decent” trigger…and added an (LVPO) optic to the dust cover. Once I figured out a way to lock down those dust covers…the zero would stay put! Now…after all that..with Winchester white Box,or Hornady SST…they would shoot tennis ball sized groups at 100 yds. With cheap (Russian/Chinese) steel Ammo..it’s 3-4” groups. Supposedly AR’s in 7.62x39 group better,as do CZ rifles. No experience with a Ruger American in that caliber…maybe someone else has one & can chime in(?) To me it was never meant to be a “precision” caliber/cartridge…but I’ve rambled enough :).
