The engines vary, but they are generally a large turbine APU engine like a PT6 or something a bit larger. (Some helicopters are powered with similar engines-and they are widely used on airliners to supply backup power, or for a power source when the main engines aren't running-APU=Auxiliary Power Unit.)

They can run on all sorts of fuels, but I would bet they were burning jet fuel-since Daytona is located right next to a pretty busy airport. May be kerosene (pretty much the same thing) but I would bet it was jet fuel tonight. Burns very hot!
I am glad no one was hurt-that could have been very nasty. I will be amazed if they can get to racing again tonight. That stuff has to have done some damage to the track-it burned for a long time!
