Why do folks call their 16”, semi-auto AR an “M4”? I do it myself, but they ain’t M4’s.
Just like the M1 Tanker, it is a phrase that has obtained common usage through the years. If someone says “Garand Tanker”, I know exactly what they are talking about and don’t assume that they posses an original.
Just like all tissues are called Kleenex, all cotton swabs are Q-Tips, and soft drinks are Coke. It’s common usage and no one is attempting to hoodwink the listener into thinking they posses something they do not.
Not the sort of thing I even come close to getting wrapped around the axle about.

Its literally what they are marketed as. Almost every builder that makes them markets them as "tanker" because anyone looking for one will know what it means. Sure its wrong, but its the same as what cmshoot said above.
