not looking for glass at this price, that can come later this year before season, but can $300 get me into a halfway decent deer rifle? Doesn't need to stack holes at 300yds, more like baseball size at 100 I'm guessing to reliably harvest deer?

a deer rifle can be anything from a mil-surplus mosin to a fancy browning bolt action
i hunt with a mosin myself and dropped a deer last year, it had a stock barrel that was just cut down to 24 inches for easier carry more then performance. the downside to the mosin is the safety is nearly worthless for keeping the chamber loaded so you have to keep your finger off that trigger when not shooting

Cherokee gun & pawn has some nice hunting rifles for cheap.
I killed a lot of deer with a Remington 742 (older gun) always reliable.
Cherokee gun had the Remington 770 for $249 I think. Decent rifle just the action not as smooth as a 700. My son had one in .308. Pretty accurate

Got a Howa in 270 that will stack those holes for you.
Heres my 300blk rifle I built for hunting this upcoming season. I've heard great things about them putting down deer on the spot with good shot placement.
