Synthetic Motor Oil vs Regular Motor Oil

I have been a Amsoil and Mobil 1 user for decades. Even on my engines with higher mileage I get better oil pressure with synthetic oils. Filter choice is also important.

What filter do you use? I know a lot of big name filters went the China route and turned to junk over the last few years. I like Wix now. Grew up on Fram - but no more.

If I were changing oil today I would get the Weekly Special at AutoZone. Six Quarts of Fully Synthetic Castrol GTX and An STP Extra Life Filter. That’s 7,000 - 10,000 miles of oil change life For $33.99.

The Conventional Oil Package that I’d be passing over would only be 3,000 - 5,000 miles of oil change life For $32.99.

If I were changing oil in some kind of turbo charged or higher octane (gas) requiring vehicle; The Castrol Edge Fully Synthetic and An STP Extra Life Filter. Also 7,000 - 10,000 miles of oil change life For $38.99.

Will you let us know what you decided and acted on?

Now I’m worried about the STP Filter may be manufactured in a manner that’s inferior to the previous manner of the STP Extended Life Filter. If it is then I’ll consider the;

Mobil One Fully Synthetic with the K&N Oil Filter For $42.99.

Use exactly what the owners manual calls for if it's a new vehicle. If not they could refuse to approve warranty claims. Synthetic oil is more resistant to combustion by product contamination and heat degradation and can be ran longer between oil changes. Not that you should avoid regular scheduled maintenance but it is a superior oil than conventional products by design.

So....I have a 5.3 chevy with around 165k miles....I've been running regular oil....I thinking about moving to synthetic....good idea?? or not....if so, which type-brand....
I figure I can get some reliable info here
Thanks!!
Same engine and I switched to full synthetic around 150k when I decided I'd do them myself going forward. No idea if it makes any difference.

Quoted from a Chevy dealer:

It is not recommended to use synthetic oil in engines that have experienced significant actions – specifically, those that have reached around 75,000 miles on the odometer. This is usually a signal that the engine is getting older and is more susceptible to wear on its inner gears and moving parts.

While synthetic oil generally protects better over a longer time, it flows more smoothly than conventional mineral oils – and for an older engine, this can mean a greater chance of grinding gears. For this reason, most manufacturers and mechanic recommend conventional oil for owners of older and more experienced engines. The slower flow of a conventional oil promises better lubrication for aging engines and can mean the difference between your engine lasting for the long haul and giving up before it is really ready to go.

I use regular oil in all my vehicles and always have and will.
