Hell, hogtie them and keep them prisoner until the reward money gets up to $250,000 and THEN tell the cops to bring the money and they can have them.

well they will have lots of cell time to consider why they didn't kill the elderly couple, instead of just tying them up. That was their major error.

Error number 1.) Killing the guards.
Error number 2.) Failing to release 30 convicts so as to cause mass confusion and depletion of resources in the manhunts.
I don't understand why they didn't kill any of the other people they interacted with, but thankfully they did not. Maybe conserving ammo?
