Ya we did a real **** job there"The Last 100 Days" of WW2. John Toland.
Once again, modern research of old documents shows that FDR was a socialist, and thought he could "talk" Stalin into anything. His administration screwed the Brits and he maneuvered Churchill into a secondary role. The Germans weren't all Nazis (boy, is that hard for America to swallow), and the Russians committed an equal amount or more war cirmes than the Wehrmacht. The US knew more about the atrocities against the Poles than they admitted, but caved to Stalin because FDR thought "if I give him everything he wants", we'll have peace.
Sorry for the rant. I've read a little too much lately that all points to this same revelation.
But, hey, we won WW2!
There are a lot of small vignettes about US POWs that marched back from Eastern Prussia ahead of the Russians. One group took over control of a small town and had to "police" it from the Russians. Another set of POWs actually carried one of their elderly German guards along with them (literally carried him on their backs), while a POW carried the German's rifle.
Just started Stephen Pressfield's "Gates of Fire" from the recommendation from the other thread.
I haven't read it in several years. I think I'll pick it up again. Let me know what you think.
