What is the cheapest/best way to reserve a domain name?

I have a couple of hundred with GoDaddy but do most hosting with HostGator, using a Reseller account so I can divide packages based on site needs. Have been with various registrars over the last 20 years and GoDaddy is about as easy as it gets.

Just let me post a warning-- if you think you have a great idea for a domain name, and go typing it into a search engine-- or even your address bar on your browser, someone may buy it before you do. Failed domain name hits get sold, and folks (or corporate bots) snap them up, possibly in seconds.

You need to go to ICANN (or whatever registry) and look alphabetically, not giving away what you are after. Or maybe go to the command line and do a ping, to see what DNS says. Though some unscrupulous ISPs have (allegedly) been selling those failed hits too. I'd look it up alphabetically and scroll through a list. For example, if you wanted "GeauxLSU.com", I'd find the Geau section, and scroll through.

This sounds ridiculous, but most assuredly happens.
