Hmm... I don't think it can really be said which gender would thrive based solely on gender. Overall, I think more men than women would adapt more easily and fare better but on a case by case basis gender would play several roles.

Men are stronger: While still slightly true overall, this is not a given. Besides which survival will probably depend more on endurance than strength. Endurance is not a gender influenced trait as much as strength so that stereotype is rendered mostly moot.

Emotionally, men are tuffer: Only when women allow it. Women don't get tuff so much as viscous when they harden. Women already use every tool they have(not all, but some) to get what they want. Guile and deceit, luring men into doing what they want with thier sexuality is not rare. In survival situations I can see some women playing weak or willing as a ploy to lure suckers in. i.e. Zombieland. lol.

As for adaptability, women are better. They have had to be since the first woman.

Of the 3 choices in the poll I can't choose any. I think it would be more the persons emotional makeup than gender that survival will hinge on. And I don't think they will have the same problems either. Or at least not perceived the same. What impacts me strongly may bounce off a woman and vice versa.

If I was going into combat in a war zone I'd prefer to have male comrades. The burden of my old fashioned man need to protect a woman would leave me vulnerable. But in a survival world I'd really want to have a capable woman around. Aside from sex(you dirty minded little boys. ;) ) I think having a woman in my life enriches life immeasurably. Even if it adds to the risks, it only makes the risk greater because you have more to lose.

Think about how girly the average American man is now. The snobs that look down on me when I'm workin on fixin their high dollar houses (male or female) with no skills beyond the board room or computer will all have it bad, very bad

that as worth the read.
well said.

I think it will come down to
- culture (white collars vs Blue collar is what i mean)
- socio economics status (food, guns, and knowledge)
- Emotional makeup of the person

Gender will play a role definitely, but a lot about survival is mental toughness

For some who might have led a gifted life from the word "go" this may be true. However, a fair number of the folk in those high-dollar houses (whether down-looking snobs or no) got there through ambition, adaptability, hard work, and a hundred other survival tactics. Some started very low in the food chain of society. Sure, they may not know how to skin a critter (or just may not have done so in a very long time), but the same attitude that got them the big house will serve them in a shtf scenario. They're not just survivors, they're climbers.

As for gender? I don't see it as predictive of success. What's between your legs has never struck me as an indicator of how tough you are in extreme circumstances.
