read the history of the 10mm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10mm_Auto and figure that the 40 S&W is a cut down from the 10mm. 9mm and 40 S&W the ballistics are nearly identical and 40 S&W ammo is 2x as expensive as 9mm.

And 40 ammo is not twice as much as 9 mm if it is you're buying it at the wrong place

I reload for practice on all..but buy defence loads until the crap hits the fan. With that said ya I can load light or hot for general practice as long as it works the slide your good.

Unless you get box of 50 .40 S&W for $10 and a box of 50 9mm for $5 you need to stop buying ammo from wherever it is you buy ammo.

What are you basing the statement on of all of us having never owned, or shot one?

Does that make you love 40 that much more? It doesn't change the internal, external, or terminal ballistics. They are still a wash.

I can understand you already own it and it works for you. I can say the same for the 686 I bought in 1980. The 2 guns are nearly identical. You couldn't say one is better than the other. The 40 S&W is a cut down 10mm. The federal government didn't manufacture federal officers hefty enough to handle the 10mm recoil. So they cut down the 10mm and now the resulting cartridge matches what the 9mm did before they started.

But to scientifically compare the two without any emotion. Ballistics for the 2 are a wash. The ammo for one costs more, and reliability reports suggest that the 40 will beat itself to death.
