Winchester safe from Tractor Supply

Over-ride key. When.... not if the lock takes a dump you remove the keypad and that allows you to open the safe with the provided key.

I've said this several times on here before but it's worth repeating. Good quality UL Rated digital safe locks do not come with a malfunction key.

Ah ok. Gotcha. What about EMPs and getting locked out?

Even the good locks give problems sometimes. Most issues are keypad related but not always. Sometimes it's the lock itself going haywire.

In the event that a new keypad or fresh hot batteries don't solve the problem it's time to drill.

As for EMP's if that happens your lock is fried. Although I think someone has come out with a lock that is supposed to be protected.

I've changed quite a few safes over to dial locks for the guys that worry about such things.

So... an update.

Called Winchester. The gal on the phone was EXTREMELY helpful.

Took the serial.. gave me the factory code for the model and boom.... I'm in.

Inside was the literature and the lockout screw thingy.

It was either a return (unlikely since it had the shipping legs attached) or some douche canoe that owns a Winchester safe knew how to remove the screw and change the code. Technical support gal says it happens all the time.

Unfortunately with their code, I can't change the code... So I had the following options:

1) use as-is with the factory code
2) return to the store, where they'd likely put some other guy through the same thing when they just re-sell it
3) they'll send a guy to replace the lock under warranty

I opted for #3. The time it would take me to go back to the store, deal with the folks to swap or return will be about the same as having someone come out. So figured I'd just leave it be and take the replacement lock.

Regardless of what you think of this safe or its quality, the support behind the product more than makes up for it.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy the brand again... though I will try the default code in-store on any future purchases :)
