Picked up this beautiful 1865 William Palmer carbine.1,001 were produced.1 was the prototype.Purchased for the Union Army. They arrived down south just when the war ended.Never put in battle. This has the Cartouche and proof Mark's still on the stock.Chambered in 56-50Rimfire.I don't think this was fired at all or much. The first bo lo t action rifle ever accepted by the military. It has a bolt action and then you cock the hammer

Very nice find.

I will advise you to be extremely careful when shooting this piece. They have issues with inconsistent headspacing that will cause case separation and a face full of hot gas.

Picked it up from a dealer in Upstate NY.As far as shooting it they make 56-50 rimfire brass shells that use a 22 blank for the primer and they should be loaded with 2f blackpowder max 45 grains with atin-lead bullet.I'm not sure I will ever fire it.

You are correct. I have some of those shells and I normally load 50gr of Fg topped with a flat base lead projectile.

You should shoot it. I have had a couple Palmers throughout the years. They are fun rifles.

Yeah Rabbit,I need to get reloading equipment also.If I still lived up North I would use it during gun season.I always hunted with a 54 cal sidelock muzzleloader. One shot one kill.Let me know what kind of equipment I should get.Or eventually I may be selling this to get back to Upstate NY.

Well if you decide to sell, I do but and broker antique firearms.

For what it's worth I will be hunting whitetail this year with a .577 Snyder.
