I have limited experience.
See if it is a older design motor/trans/bodystyle.
See what all trans will bolt up or be adapted.
Check your electronics to see if they are good and what model trans fit or could be adapted.
I would think that would narrow down the options.

I did this to my Nissan Pickup, the speedo and shifter were "different" i just swapped my old stuff onto the new transmission and away I went.

May be worth a call to Toyota to price a new one if its still available. Even at say $4-5k for a new one you can't replace the truck for that price.
