.308 Stockpilers....

How do you do it? Buy 1000 at a time? A box here and a box there? I'm trying to make myself make the switch from 7.62x39 to .308, but...HOLY CRAP!!! Good .308 is close to $1/round. That's a lot when you're used to paying $200/1000. I know the .308 round is infinitely superior to x39, but the price difference is making this difficult.

Try these, but you you have to be vigilent:

Good luck. ;)

The only 308 I have now is a Ruger Gunsite Scout. I have a couple houndred rounds of FGGM for more precison shooting. The rifle is almost a one MOA gun.

For general blasting I have been running Brown Bear FMJ. I picked up a case of MFS ammo this weekend. It seems to be identical to Sliver Bear 140 grn. soft points. It was about .45 cents a round and from what I have read fairly accurate. It very well maybe a good in between round.

That being said the Russain steel case stuff seems to be drying up, thats why I'm stocking it as fast as I can.

Hope that helps, Mikey394

"Infinitely superior" is a hell of a stretch, especially if you are factoring in price (which you seem to be), and weight. If you are talking about BR accuracy then sure, but maybe not with cheap surplus ammo.

I have been going through the same..... I seen a guy trying to get a few people together to go in on a larger order of ammo. I would of done it but I am not looking FMJ....

I've got a couple of bolt rifles, two AR's, and recently sold my Remington 5R and last two M1a's, all chambered in .308.

I've been loading for about 25 years. A lot of folks give me their once fired brass. I also resize 7mm/08 brass to .308. It works great. Brass is the most expensive component. I watch for sales and buy in bulk. I recently bought new Winchester brass for $16.00/100. I bought a pile of it. I buy my powder 8lbs at a time, primers usually in lots of 5K. I use the same powder and primers in several other calibers too.

The M1A's I love, but they kill brass quickly, that's why I finally just sold them. If you love to shoot, want superior performance, and manage to save a buck, then handloading is a natural next step.

Most of my favorite calibers are not everyday stuff you find on sale at wallyworld. I love the 6.8 SPC, the 7X57, .257 Roberts, etc. Handloading makes feeding them a quality diet a piece of cake. What price do you put on fun?

My dad and I each throw $20 into a "ammo jar" every week(He watches my little girl on the weekends while I work so it has become more or less ritual when I drop her off) and he keeps an eye out for deals on bulk. The last two 1k round deals we got were .308. We also do .45 and .556 but it is a nice easy on the wallet way to build up surplus ammo over time.
