Depends on what you're doing. I use a vice block or a reaction rod if I'm using a wrench and applying torque.

You need it for the barrel nut. Maybe the flash hider, depends on how tight its torqued.

I don't think you'll need one for flash hider, but it definitely keeps you from rigging something together or marring the crap out of an upper for the barrel nut.
